I never got to see them live in their heydays. The have reunited in 2010. And when I got to see them live on a festival quite some years back, somehow it didn’t click that well with me. Now in 2026 they released a new album. And actually quite good album it is. Even a European tour was planned, and on this day it brought them to Leiden, just the day before I went to Switzerland. There were 2 support acts.

The first being Tar Pond, also from Switzerland. The drummer is the former drummer of Coroner, and Martin Ain of Celtic Frost used to play bass in it. Switzerland is apparently a small metal country. Musically though it is quite different from either band as it is more doom metal. It somehow didn’t really click with me. They played only three songs in half an hour.

The second band was something completely else. Schizephrenia comes from Belgium and they play thrashy death metal, kind of like early Morbid Angel. They even played a cover of them, Maze of Torment. It was fast and high-energy with the band quite active on stage. I wasn’t familiar with them but it actually sounded quite good with some impressive drumming. Musically nothing ground breaking, but more back to the 90s death metal. Pretty cool gig.

Then it was time for the main act Coroner. They opened with a couple of new songs, namely the first two songs of the new album. And it actually sounded great. They brought a fourth band member to play some keyboards and do backing vocals. Ron was obviously enjoying playing live. The new songs fit right in with the older material and came across even better than on the album. They played a few older songs too, Serpent Moves and Grin from their previous album, sounded much more interesting than they ever did on the album. Mental Vortex supplied no less than three songs and at least one song was played of the other albums. The guitar solos by Tom were quite virtuoso, and quite impressive. They ended the set with Renewal but came back for an encore to play Reborn Through Hate and Die By My Hand. Actually a really good gig. Hopefully it won’t take them another 30 years to tour again.

Coroner were an interesting and quiet original technical thrash metal band from Switzerland that released some 5 five interesting and varied album in the 80s and early 90s, then calling it quits.
