Sorcery @ Willemeen, Arnhem, 6 November 2026

One of the oldest Swedish death metal bands was doing a short tour. Starting in 1986, 40 years ago, they managed to release one album in the early 90s as well as some demos and EPs and then broke up, like so many bands from that time. Many years later they resurfaced and now they have just released their fifth album. Even though they never got the recognition the big four received, they recorded quite some cool music.

The venue added a local band for support first, namely Sons of Snakes. And they drew in quite a crowd already as the small venue was already quite full. I missed most of the gig as I was a bit late and they band started a little earlier than scheduled. It was punkish mixed with some Motorhead style metal I guess. For the song and a half I saw it was okay.

The next band was from Ireland and is called Cutthroat. These youngster play quite aggressive death metal with a lot of thrash influences. This power trio had quite some interesting and original riffs albeit with tons of squealies. Most of the guitar solos were whammy bar acrobatics and also squealies. But it kind of worked. Some cool drum work too. It was actually quite a good gig. In the mean time quite some people left already as they apparently came for the opening band.

Then it was time for Sorcery. I have never seen them live before. But on album they are quite good. They opened with the intro of their debut album Blood Chilling Tales from tape but then actually started a new song. No surprises there, they still sound like Swedish death metal. Maybe a bit lighter than early Entombed. Some more catchy, yet haunting melodies throughout the songs. It mixed right in with the older material like Legacy of Blood. Holy Ground has some killer melodies too. They played three songs of each album, except Garden of Bones, which only got two songs. Actually a cool gig by a cool, kind of obscure band.
