Massacre @ Baroeg, 2 November 2007

During the reunion season, yet another long split-up band decided to reform just for a couple of gigs. This time the old cadaver of the American Massacre had been re-animated and decided to tour Europe. A tour that I heard didn’t go too well with approximately 50 visitors per show. At 2 November, they made a stop at the refurbished Baroeg, and hence I paid a visit. The Baroeg turned out to be quite crowded, but not sold out.

The first support slot was allocated to the French death metal band Ashura. The band brings a rather dull kind of death metal with a few interesting lead guitar work. But overall nothing special, or heard-before.

The second band was Kam Lee’s new band Denial Fiend with basically the same lineup as Massacre, but nevertheless this is nothing like them. Brought as an old school death metal band, it is nothing more than a very boring and simple thrashy death metal – even more boring than Six Feet Under and that is quite a feat – with horror themed lyrics. The only interesting aspect of this performance was the cover they played of Death’s Legion of Doom.

The final support slot was filled by the Belgian Exterminator, as Jungle Rot had cancelled their participation. This Belgian band has been around for a long time, but never managed to get a label deal. Yet they have released two albums themselves. I don’t find it strange that they never got a deal as they do not make very interesting music. The opening track had some interesting guitar work, but most of all it is rather boring and lacks originality.

Then finally Massacre appeared on stage, basically Denial Fiend with an extra guitar player. Of the 90’s lineup only Kam Lee and Terry Butler are present so one can wonder if this is the real Massacre, without the main song writer and guitarist Rick Rozz missing. The band started with “Dawn of Eternity” and continued to play all the songs of the From Beyond album in order, except “Symbolic Immortality”. Butler tried playing the classic intro of “Chamber of Ages” but that wasn’t very well played nor vey audible. Otherwise this was a decent show and it was very cool to hear all these old song of this classic band, of which some members have been there when death metal began (Rozz and Lee were part of the original Mantas line-up that later became the mighty Death). As an encore the only non album track was played “Provoked Accuser”.
