Amongst all these crappy – sell-out – reunions, sometimes something interesting surfaces. And so after many years – 11 since their last album the Americans of Sacred Reich decided to do a reunion and played a few shows (4) in Europe, including a show in the Dynamo club in Eindhoven – I’m quite sure that this is due to their huge success at the dynamo open air show of 1989.
The opening act was the German thrash metal band Contamination, who already released five full-length albums but I had never heard of them. The band were inspired with a wacky bass player who jumped into the audience twice during the show. Musically it was all okay but like so many German bands (Sodom and Kreator aside) are totally lacking in originality. A nice warm-up but no more.
After a long pause of nearly 45 minutes it was time for the band every one came to see: Sacred Reich. The show was sold out and the Dynamo club was full – many with old-school-style jeans jackets with many patches that you don’t see that much any more these days. The band seemed fresh, the sound was good and at the first notes of opening track “The American Way” a huge moshpit was formed that didn’t end until the final notes of the encore “Surf Nicaragua” and plenty of stage diving. Phil Rind and co seemingly enjoyed the frantic chaos and referred back to the 89 dynamo show. Most of the songs were from the first two albums and the Surf Nicaragua EP – only Independent was featured of later albums. To my surprise there was no “Draining You of Life” or “Sacred Reich”. Anyway, it seems that thrash metal is still very much alive considering this splendid gig. I wonder if they will continue or that we have to wait for another 10 years.
