Kreator had re-issued their latest opus, Enemy of God, and I suppose that was reason enough to do another tour.
I had completely missed the opening act Watain due to a change in time schedules. I walked into the hall just as they started to change the set. No big loss tho as I the band didn’t interest me when I saw them some time ago. However, some people seems to claim that their latest album is somewhat alike the classic Dissection album ”Storm of the Lights Bane”.
So the first band for me of the evening was the Dutch quartet Legion of the Damned, formerly known as Occult. They could really benefit from adding a good lead guitarist to their line-up. Initially this band sounds really good, but after a couple songs things start to sound sameish – so some interesting leads could spice it up a bit.
Then there was Celtic Frost who were more or less co-headlining this tour. I never was much interested in this band, despite that they have a huge cult status. I listened to their latest album on my way to Tilburg and I can’t say that I like it; too much industrial influences. And live they couldn’t convince me either. I can’t get into their style of songs, their vocals or the somewhat odd guitar sound. The announcements by the bass player were weird to say the least.
So then it was finally time for the German thrash metal masters Kreator who had prepared an 80-minute set. The stage was adorned with huge banners inspired by the artwork of Enemy of God. During some songs a video track was projected behind the band showing some weird footage, which some distracted. Although the sound of the evening with the previous bands were okay, with Kreator it turned out at the first few notes that it was way too bass -heavy – guitars were low in the mix and at times completely inaudible. Nevertheless Kreator ripped with a set list composed of many classic tunes. Opening with the title track of their more or less comeback album, and followed by the monstrous Pleasure to Kill, Kreator displayed their enthusiasm. After the regular set, they came back for three more songs, finishing with two tracks of their very first album from more than 20 years ago. The footage on the screen behind them was I presume taken from that era, showing some live performance shots of a very young band, laced with some “head lines”. Kreator Setlist:
