Macabre @ baroeg – 6 april 2006

Macabre was in Europe once again and brought three bands on their tour. When I arrived, there were few people in the venue although it wasn’t long before the first band started. Defaced kicked off the evening. This Israeli band couldn’t really get the attention of most of the audience, and I didn’t think much of it either. Rather sloppy, standard death metal mixed with metalcore or something. Dull and uninspired. They closed their set with Sepultura’s ‘Roots Blood Roots’ for which I didn’t care either.

Things got a little better when the Dutch death metal band Xenomorph took the stage. At this time the venue was slowly filling up and the band at least got some response. Their mostly rather generic death metal could not really interest me much.

The last warm-up for the evening was Jungle Rot. A band I had seen before and then thougth were rather boring. And that is how I’d sum up their gig now.

Finally, the main act – Macabre – came on stage. This was the 8th time I saw them and the last 3 times or so, they disappointed me a bit, by being sloppy as well as playing the same old songs again. The band mostly played classic tracks of all their albums as they didn’t have a new album to promote. Macabre played better this time. The audience was enthusiastic and this inspired Macabre, playing Mary Bell when the audience requested it. Nevertheless most of the set was predictable, which I still find a shame for a band that has more than 60 songs to choose from.
