This is the third gig I went to in 5 days. After Into the Grave and Gorguts it was now time to see Immolation who were touring for a couple of festivals, and Krisiun. No less than three bands were brought as support, as part of Immolation’s tour.
Due to the crazy starting time – 19.00 and the travelling – about an hour and a half – I missed the first band – Absurdity. And the Belgian Zardens were already playing as I entered the venue. I didn’t either band, so not a big deal. Zardens was okay – basically old school death metal. They have some cool riffs. So it was quite okay to see these guys.
Then there were the Greek Raw In Sect who play a kind of thrashy groove metal which I didn’t find that interesting. They also played a Sepultura cover – Territory – which I only noticed when they were more than halfway through the song. Not a good sign I guess. Anyway there set was rather short with about four or five songs.
It took a while to prepare the stage for Krisiun as a new drumkit was needed to be set-up. But when they at last started, Krisiun pulled of another very tight set – as always with a set list featuring songs from most of their albums. Such as The Will to Potency, Hatred Inherit, Vicious Wrath, Bloodcraft and the closing track Kings of Killing. It’s always remarkable to see how fast and precise this band always is. Excellent gig.
But then the question is, could the mighty Immolation top that. The sound was a bit softer than with Krisiun, perhaps a bit too soft but at least all the instruments were quite balanced. The opening track was nothing less that the killer title track of the Close to a World Below album. And what followed was a sort of best of set covering nearly all their albums, with lots of classics such as No Jesus no Beast, or Under the supreme. It is always fascinating that Robert Vigna can pull of all those technical and dissonant riffs while he swings his guitar in all directions. So a very interesting set and excellent performance from this 25 year old band. And they’ll be back in October and have a new album out shortly.
