The (North) Irish lads of Gama Bomb picked a rather wintry time to play around here. The cold (-10 C) and snow probably apparently kept many people home, as only some 50 showed up eventually.
Gama Bomb didn’t bring any support acts so the club had arranged for two. Opening act was Nuestros Derechos of which I missed most. They play thrashcore vaguely reminiscent of Suicidal Tendencies and SOD. Not really my liking tho. They ended their set with a cover of Death’s Evil Dead but it wasn’t played too well.
The second slot was located to Magnetron (which is microwave oven in English). A bassless band that plays fast thrashy metal with an apparent focus on the “having fun” part. Not in the least because of the talking in between songs. One doesn’t come across thrash much that is full of blast beats especially on when the drummer also sings. On the other hand not really a band that I’d enjoy on an album much, but it seems to work live quite well.
And then there was Gama Bomb at last. They play fast thrash without any of the modern touches and some weird lyrics and matching titles. Lots of killer riffs packed in short songs and a singer with great enthusiasm despite the small crowd. The guitar leads are something that stand out with some interesting ideas. Although this band is rather young, they already have 3 albums under their belt – the latest not yet released on CD but was available for download. And so they picked a variety of songs from all their material, including Fortified Zone, Hell Trucker, Bullet Belt, Zombie Blood Nightmare, Evil Voices, OCP, Hammer Slammer, Zombie Brew, Thrashoholic, Slam Anthem, Three Witches, Last Ninjas Unite (including the singer trying to make the audience do their best Ninja moves – and sounds), Mussolini Mosh, We Respect You, Apocalypse 1997 and Mummy Invasion. Perhaps not the best Thrash band since the glory days of thrash – which was like 1985 or so – but a solid effort natheless.
